Week Three Learning to Sew

This project has been moving along smoothly so far. There have not been many challenges to myself yet, but I can almost guarantee I will run into struggles once I start on the blanket. This past week I watched my mom sew a button back onto my father's pants. She walked me through it, but I did not attempt to do it myself because that is what I will be doing next week.

Instead of using a sewing machine to repair the button, my mother used a needle and thread and did it by hand. It was a simple pattern to do and seemed easy enough that even someone like me with little to no artistic skill could do it. I guess we will see how I do next week.

To sew a button onto thread, a simple cross pattern is used through the four holes on the button. I remember for the most part how-to do it but I will most likely need a small refresher when I go to do it myself. I will practice on a piece of fabric, and if someone needs their button sewed back on a shirt or pants I can do that once I gain experience.

So far this project has been pretty laid back, but I am extremely excited to continue on with it
and I hope that I am able to do it myself. I am still not sure how exactly the pictures work on Blogger, so sorry in advance if they format poorly.

  1. I have had problems posting photos before. I placed them in via a link and they broke the next time I logged on. Placing them side by side was a pain as well. I found that enlarging a photo and then placing the smaller photo next to it will place the photos on the same line. You should then be able to properly size the photos and center them. You might have to try multiple times.

Anyhow, I look forward learning how to sew on a button with you.

  2. I'm glad it's progressing so smoothly. Learning to sew a button just takes a lot of practice. It's a lot of repetition, but it isn't necessarily difficult. I remember when I learned how to sew on a button; I sewed them on any spare piece of cloth I could find. I haven't seen anyone use a sewing machine to sew one on, but it would be interesting to learn how. Good luck with the blanket.

  3. Sewing a button is something that would seem so simple but in reality it can be hard to do right. In doing it myself, when I first started my buttons often would pop off. It's hard to do it in a way that you don't use too much thread but still secure it. It seems like such a simple skill to know but it will come in handy down the road.

  5. It's cool that you're using your mom as a resource! When I sew on buttons, I always had problems tying off the string. I'm excited to see what ways your remedy this!
